About Units

Universal unit converter supporting length (meters, feet, miles), weight (kg, lb), temperature (C, F, K), time, digital storage (bytes, MB, GB), and speed units.

Unit conversion sounds like a closed problem — everyone learns it in school — but in practice it's where small errors cause expensive mistakes. NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter because one team used pounds-force and another used newtons. A recipe that swaps cups for grams without accounting for ingredient density comes out wrong. Shipping a package in inches when the carrier wants centimeters can bump you into a higher rate tier. Converting in your head works for round numbers; the rest of the time you want a tool.

This converter covers the six most common categories: length (meters, feet, inches, miles, kilometers), weight/mass (kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, stones), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin — the only category where the formula isn't simple multiplication), time (seconds through years), digital storage (bytes through petabytes, with both binary and decimal definitions), and speed (mph, km/h, m/s, knots). Values update live as you type, and you can convert in either direction within a category.

People use it for cooking with international recipes, understanding foreign weather forecasts, sizing furniture when ordering from different regions, estimating file transfer times, and the constant friction of the US using imperial while the rest of the world uses metric.

How to use the Units
  1. 1

    Pick a category

Choose length, weight, temperature, time, data, or speed. Each category has its own set of units.

  2. 2

    Enter a value

Type a number in any unit's field. Every other unit in the category updates simultaneously — no need to pick a 'from' and 'to' direction.

  3. 3

    Copy the result

Click any result to copy its value. Decimal precision is preserved up to what's reasonable for the unit — no spurious trailing digits.

Common use cases

International recipes

Convert European recipe measurements (grams, Celsius, milliliters) to US units (cups, Fahrenheit, ounces) when cooking from a cookbook or blog.

Travel weather and distance

Translate forecasts in Celsius to Fahrenheit, or distance to destinations from kilometers to miles when driving in an unfamiliar country.

Furniture and packaging sizing

Match centimeter dimensions on a product page to the inches you measured for your space, or vice versa before placing an order.

File and bandwidth estimation

Convert between GB and GiB (decimal vs. binary), or figure out how many minutes a given file size will take to upload at a known Mbps.

Frequently asked questions
Why does temperature conversion use a formula instead of multiplication?

Temperature scales have different zero points. Celsius and Kelvin differ by 273.15 but share degree size; Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points AND different degree sizes. So F = C × 9/5 + 32. It's not a simple ratio like length or weight.

What's the difference between GB and GiB?

GB (gigabyte, decimal) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB (gibibyte, binary) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — a 7.4% difference. Hard drive manufacturers use GB; operating systems often display GiB. A '1 TB' drive shows as 931 GiB in your OS, not a defect.

How accurate are the conversions?

Exact for defined ratios (1 inch = 2.54 cm by definition). Length, weight, and temperature are accurate to at least 6 decimal places. Time is handled as exact conversions except where month/year length varies — those use averages.

What's the difference between mass and weight?

Colloquially they're used interchangeably; scientifically, mass is an intrinsic property (kilograms) and weight is a force (newtons = mass × gravity). Most unit converters including this one handle 'weight' as mass, which is what people mean on Earth.

Can I convert cooking volumes like cups?

Volume conversions (cups to milliliters) are unambiguous. But 'cup of flour to grams' depends on the ingredient's density — a cup of flour is ~120g while a cup of sugar is ~200g. For accurate cooking conversions, use an ingredient-specific tool.
