Unit conversion sounds like a closed problem — everyone learns it in school — but in practice it's where small errors cause expensive mistakes. NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter because one team used pounds-force and another used newtons. A recipe that swaps cups for grams without accounting for ingredient density comes out wrong. Shipping a package in inches when the carrier wants centimeters can bump you into a higher rate tier. Converting in your head works for round numbers; the rest of the time you want a tool.
This converter covers the six most common categories: length (meters, feet, inches, miles, kilometers), weight/mass (kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, stones), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin — the only category where the formula isn't simple multiplication), time (seconds through years), digital storage (bytes through petabytes, with both binary and decimal definitions), and speed (mph, km/h, m/s, knots). Why does temperature conversion use a formula instead of multiplication?
Temperature scales have different zero points. Celsius and Kelvin differ by 273.15 but share degree size; Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points AND different degree sizes. So F = C × 9/5 + 32. It's not a simple ratio like length or weight.
What's the difference between GB and GiB?
GB (gigabyte, decimal) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB (gibibyte, binary) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — a 7.4% difference. Hard drive manufacturers use GB; operating systems often display GiB. A '1 TB' drive shows as 931 GiB in your OS, not a defect.
How accurate are the conversions?
Exact for defined ratios (1 inch = 2.54 cm by definition). Length, weight, and temperature are accurate to at least 6 decimal places. Time is handled as exact conversions except where month/year length varies — those use averages.
What's the difference between mass and weight?
Colloquially they're used interchangeably; scientifically, mass is an intrinsic property (kilograms) and weight is a force (newtons = mass × gravity). Most unit converters including this one handle 'weight' as mass, which is what people mean on Earth.
Can I convert cooking volumes like cups?
Volume conversions (cups to milliliters) are unambiguous. But 'cup of flour to grams' depends on the ingredient's density — a cup of flour is ~120g while a cup of sugar is ~200g. For accurate cooking conversions, use an ingredient-specific tool.
