Fuel Cost Calculator
Calculate the fuel cost of any trip from distance, fuel efficiency, and price per litre or gallon.
Enter your trip distance, vehicle fuel efficiency, and local fuel price to get the total fuel cost instantly. Switch between metric (km, L/100 km) and imperial (miles, mpg) with one click. Split the cost across multiple passengers to see what each person owes.
Planning a road trip means knowing the fuel bill before you leave, not after. This calculator takes three numbers -- distance, fuel efficiency, and price at the pump -- and returns the total fuel cost, fuel volume used, and cost per unit distance. Switching between metric (kilometres, litres, L/100 km) and imperial (miles, gallons, mpg) takes one click and recalculates everything instantly.
The passenger split makes group travel easy. Enter the number of people sharing the car and the per-person cost appears alongside the total. That removes the mental arithmetic at the end of the trip when everyone is tired and nobody agrees on the math.
Fuel efficiency values for your vehicle are usually in the owner's manual or on the manufacturer's website. Real-world consumption is typically 10-15% higher than the rated figure because of traffic, load, and driving style. For long trips, use the EPA combined rating or your average from the last few fill-ups for a more accurate estimate.
- 1
Choose your unit system
Toggle between Metric (km, L/100 km, price per litre) and Imperial (miles, mpg, price per gallon). All fields update to match immediately.
- 2
Enter trip details
Type the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price. Results recalculate with every keystroke.
- 3
Split the cost
Set the number of passengers and the calculator shows cost per person alongside the total. Leave it at 1 if you're travelling alone.
Road trip budgeting
Price out a long drive before booking hotels. Knowing the fuel bill helps you allocate the total trip budget accurately.
Carpooling cost splits
Calculate each passenger's fair share of fuel on a shared commute or group trip without mental arithmetic.
Comparing vehicles
Run the same route with different fuel efficiency values to see how much a more economical car saves over a year of commuting.
Delivery and logistics
Estimate fuel costs for a delivery run or service call to include in quotes or track against actuals.
How is the fuel cost calculated?
Metric: fuel used (litres) = distance (km) / 100 x efficiency (L/100 km), then cost = litres x price per litre. Imperial: fuel used (gallons) = distance (miles) / mpg, then cost = gallons x price per gallon.
Why does my real fuel cost differ from the estimate?
Real-world consumption is usually 10-15% above the manufacturer's rated figure. Traffic, speed, air conditioning, load, and tyre pressure all affect efficiency. Use your average from recent fill-ups for the best estimate.
How do I find my vehicle's fuel efficiency?
Check the owner's manual, the manufacturer's website, or a site like fueleconomy.gov (US) or the Vehicle Certification Agency (UK). For a real-world figure, divide kilometres (or miles) driven by litres (or gallons) used on your last fill-up.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. All calculations happen in your browser. Your distance, efficiency, and fuel price are never sent to a server. Settings like unit system and passenger count are saved locally in your browser so they persist between visits.
Can I use this for diesel or electric vehicles?
For diesel, use the same inputs -- diesel prices and L/100 km or mpg. For electric vehicles, the formula does not apply directly because efficiency is measured in kWh/100 km or miles per kWh rather than fuel volume. A separate electricity cost calculator would be needed for EVs.
